IT engineer Yeoh Seng Huat has already bid for seven “WWW” numbers but will put in a last bid before the deadline.
“This time I will bid for my birth year,” said the Penang-born, who has been a vehicle registration number enthusiast for the past two decades. Yeoh is excited about the “WWW” prefix, partly because he thinks that “number plates these days are not just numbers”. "There are an art" he added.
His highest bid for the plate number was RM 1,900. Yeoh’s seven bids were among the 14,131 received for the “WWW” prefix so far.
He said he had been at the JPJ Wangsa Maju branch for three afternoons (Wednesday to Friday) because he could not make up his mind about the numbers. He ended up bidding for numbers that are of sentimental value to him, as well as those he thinks have a “resale value”. Yeoh’s seven bids were among the 14,131 received for the “WWW” prefix so far.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said this was the highest number of bids ever recorded by the JPJ, far surpassing the previous record – “WVW” at 4,750 bids. The minimum bid for “premium” numbers (from 1 to 10) and “attractive numbers” (from 11 to 19 plus numbers like 3333) are RM10,000 and RM2,000 respectively while popular and running numbers require a minimum bid of RM300.
Kong said the MCA 1 plate, which went for RM300,100 in 2010, currently holds the record of the highest bid. The latest bid would open on May 24. The WWW bid is popular because the surname Wong or Wang rhymes with “prosperity” and “emperor” in Chinese.
It is believed to bring good luck as the number three rhymes with “growth”, thus three Ws mean good luck will continue to grow. Those who are interested to bid for the “WWW” prefix can do so at the Kuala Lumpur JPJ offices in Wangsa Maju, Bandar Sri Permaisuri and Maju Junction before 12pm of 14 May 2012.
